Wendy Ella Guilford Scholarship Fund

Scholarships awarded to a deserving student who intends to pursue a baccalaureate degree or advanced degree at any accredited college or university in the United States or its possessions. Applicants must be current graduating seniors of a high school in Dallas, Tarrant or Denton County, Texas and demonstrate the vision and values that honor the legacy of Wendy Ella Guilford.

Applicants are required to provide two letters of recommendation and submit a response to the essay question. Finalists will be asked to attend one in-person interview.

  1. Please select one of the following topics and compose an essay of 500-1000 words:
    • In the era of Fox News, CNN and the decline of newspapers, is there today a source of unbiased reporting? If yes, what is/are the source(s) and how can unbiased reporting be identified? If no, was there ever?
    • "Nineteen Fourteen", a collection of sonnets by Rubert Brooke, is often panned by critics but is popular among the British public. Is it good poetry? Why or why not? What makes good poetry?
    • Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two children but only enough savings to send one of them to college. John has engaged in many extracurriculars and has middling grades while Joanna has studied hard through the years and has stellar grades. Mr. and Mrs. Smith announce to their children that John will be receiving whatever financial support they can provide. Did they make the right choice? Why or why not?
    • Has the relatively recent adoption of electronic messaging changed how we use the English language? Do we write and/or speak differently now and if so is that a movement in a positive or negative direction?
